BY THE NUMBERS BLOG My nerdy friend David who is degreed in economics as well as a small business owner writes a very cool blog where he pulls together figures to demonstrate the folly of today's current economic policies. Read it by clicking here.
THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR This book should be required reading for all high school seniors. It blows apart the media myth of how millionaires really live. Buy it on Amazon here.
THE CREATURE FROM JEKYLL ISLAND Want to know why we have the Federal Reserve? If you don't, you should and everyone should read this book. Buy it here.
More stuff to read as I think of it...
THEY SHOULDN'T BE SURPRISE WITH STORIES LIKE THESE:
ONLY GOVERNMENT WORKERS WOULD STRIKE OVER A 14.5% RAISE If you work in the private sector, this story will INFURIATE you. The only upside I see is that they are in Illnois and I don't have to deal with them. The real problem here isn't JUST the meager 14.5% raise offered to these ingrates, but the fact they are expected to pay a whopping 10% of their own healthcare costs. TEN WHOLE PERCENT! Which means the suckers taxpayers get to foot 90% of them. But that's an improvement over the 99% the taxpayers pay now. And these jackals are striking. Fire them all. In one fell swoop. Period.
AND ONE LAST UNFLATTERING STORY ABOUT GOVT WORKERS Because I think it's very funny because it's so utterly stereotypical. Who wants to be a government employee? Cheaters, that's who.
A JOBLESS FUTURE? This letter to the editor exposes a rather impertinent line of thinking that is more prevalent than you might think. It supposes that we are out of ideas, that there is nothing new and we might as well realize that we are moving to a society where there is no need for people to work because there isn't enough for them to do. No word in here on how we are going to pay for these lucky bastards who have been replaced by technology.
THE FEDS WANT TO KNOW WHERE AND HOW YOU DRIVE by the end of this year even. A new federal regulation may require all cars to have:
“vehicle-to-vehicle” (V2V) communications technology that constantly broadcasts via radio wave the car’s location, direction, speed and, possibly, even the number of passengers it is carrying."
This is a little too Big Brother for my taste. But is this what's necessary to get us to a point where driverless cars could be a reality? Because I want that. But I don't want the government to know where I am at all times. Darn, this is hard.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET IT COME HERE Monty Python reuniting and creating a stage show is fantastic news. Now we just need to figure out how to make it come here. And now for something completely different.
HOW CAN YOU CALL ENROLLING PEOPLE IN MEDICAID SUCCESS? We are supposed to be rejoicing now that more Coloradoans are getting health insurance via Medicaid. How many more? 47,309 to be exact since the new Colorado Udallcare website cranked up. A mere 6,001 people have signed up for private health insurance. So in the coming years, as your premiums and deductibles go up, we get to see increased spending on Medicaid. Where is this money coming from? That was a rhetorical question, it's coming from you and me. We could have signed up all these people without a new website. Just saying.
SPEAKING OF MEDICAID Why don't we ask hospitals if they are looking forward to more Medicaid patients? You don't have to read the whole story from The Chieftain to get the important part, which is this:
"Medicaid patients are included in the “charity care” category because reimbursement rates “aren’t even close” to true costs, Patterson explained."
But I'm sure adding so many people to Medicaid will be just fine.
ONE MORE UDALLCARE STORY TODAY And this one is a classic. After allowing herself and her story to be used as a political flak jacket, the single mom touted by President Obama himself as an Obamacare success story is still without insurance. I want to read this to you because it's that rich. But you can read it yourself here.
THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRET ABOUT THE POT TAX This story has been written a thousand times over the years, right after voters or politicians decide a big new tax is needed for some such thing. In this case, it's the pot tax and how it funds school construction. People who voted for the tax because it was going to build schools should probably understand how such taxes work and how this may just put more pressure on the general fund in the long run. This column does a nice job explaining how you probably got duped. Again.
SHAME ON CBS IF THIS IS TRUE Why would CBS scrub mentions of the out of state groups pushing a fracking ban in Colorado? According to Colorado Peak Politics, higher ups got involved and scrubbed a reporter's online story. Part of me is very skeptical of this, as I've seen how tv newsrooms operate and it would be unusual for muckety mucks to change a story after it was written. I do think CBS has some explaining to do as to why this happened.
BUT THEY'VE GOT IT RIGHT ABOUT WHO IF FUNDING THE ANTI FRACKING CAMPAIGN And they aren't local. Complete Colorado is doing nice work digging into who is REALLY bankrolling these campaigns. It makes perfect sense to me after voters have soundly rejected outside interference by Michael Bloomberg and his ilk in other issues. Of course they want to hide their DC connections.
REMEMBER THE EXTREMELY CONVENIENT DROP IN UNEMPLOYMENT BEFORE THE ELECTION? Many, me included, thought those numbers were too good to be true. And so perfectly timed. Now there is at least one man who admits the information that makes up the unemployment surveys was FAKED. MADE UP. An overzealous employee, under orders from his bosses, made up surveys. The only question, in light of what we know about the IRS and NSA, is how high up the food chain this went.
THIS IS SO...WELL...STEREOTYPICALLY PERFECT What do student cheaters want to be when they grow up? Government employees, of course. I can't make this stuff up.
YOU CAN TELL A LOT ABOUT HOW YOU TREAT SOMEONE WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING And some Navy SEALS are saying the treatment they've gotten by the Pentagon is not exactly inspiring. From facing court martial based on the lies of a terrorist to having private information leaked to the press, the SEALS are not feeling the love from this Administration. At least not when there isn't a photo op.
YOU'D THINK THEY'D STOP PLANNING THESE IN WINTER I can't tell you how many stories about global warming protestors being met by snow. You would think they would move these protests to July or something.
REMEMBER WHEN I SAID SOMETHING GOOD WILL COME OUT OF UDALLCARE? This graph may be the best news yet. Give the people what they think they want, and they will soon realize, they don't want that at all.
THIS IS NEW SOMEHOW? This story makes it seem as if the fact there are people willing to pay $98 for a pair of yoga pants is new. When I was growing up, I was definitely in the "have not" category compared to my friends. But in order to get people to hate rich people enough to embrace socialism, expect more stories like this one.
DEAR ATHEISTS, THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HATE YOU I stand by my assertion that there are two kinds of atheists, those who simply don't believe and those who are an unmitigated pain in the ass if you don't agree with them. And now the kings of reason have shut down a Christmas toy drive in South Carolina. Because giving needy kids toys at Christmas is the worst thing ever. No, I take that back, these "humanists" are.
SO THE PROBLEM ALL ALONG WAS ILLEGALS? Rep. Jared Polis is on record as saying the reason why Obamacare isn't working is because illegals aren't operating under the same laws as the rest of us. After you get over the obvious nature of this statement, continue reading the article in question to see Rep. Polis invoke "cost-sharing", which before now was a right wing bogeyman, something made up as an excuse for high health care costs that in reality was no big deal. But NOW, cost shifting will be invoked as a reason to give legal status to illegals so we can force them to follow the law of Obamacare. Because people here illegally will surely follow the law if only we give them legal status. And Rep. Polis is taking a big leap here by inferring that signing a bunch of new people up for Medicaid is somehow going to provide relief on the taxpayer. It's almost as if he doesn't realize that Obamacare is entirely predicated on someone else paying for the health care costs of others. It really doesn't matter if it's a hospital being shorted by an illegal without insurance or Medicaid paying the bill for a newly legalized person, it still going to fall on the shoulders of the middle and upper class anyway.
A PRAYER FOR THE FAMILIES OF TWO MINERS This weekend was pretty traumatic for many, as tornados wreaked havoc on the midwest and two miners lost their lives early Sunday morning in Ouray. 36 miners have died this year alone. And we worry about football players cracking heads. And mining is only the 15th most dangerous job in the US. Click here to see the rest.
BATKID BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER When you start to think there is nothing that can bring people together, read this story. I love this so much I could marry it.
I AM NOT MOVED BY KENNEDY'S DEATH Over the weekend, CBS Sunday Morning was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination. I didn't watch. Although I can appreciate the magnitude of the event historically, it doesn't move me. It isn't my biggest life event as I wasn't even a twinkle in my parent's eyes in 1963. But watching the boomers look back I wondered one thing: the same people who hate it when anyone invokes 9/11 are more than happy to look back in maudlin wonder at the death of one man.
WHEN LIB POLICIES FAIL, THE RESULT IS THE "NEW NORMAL" For the record, I believe wholeheartedly that Paul Krugman is a Keynesian idiot. His view of economics is hopelessly screwed up because for Paul Krugman, there can be no government big ENOUGH. You'd think with a President who subscribes to the same mantra in office, Paul Krugman would be happy as a pig in poop. Only the policies Krugman advocates have failed. Miserably. And now he's lofting the balloon that the reason they failed is because...well...this is the new normal. He wants us to believe that this economy is the new economy because nothing can be done to fix it. Convenient, eh?
OKAY, ENOUGH WITH THE BIT STRIP ALREADY If you are on Facebook, you know what I'm talking about. Making the fact you are making a sandwich a comic strip makes it no more interesting than when you take a picture of it or describe it to me in detail. Stop it already.
JUST BECAUSE IT'S MONDAY And I thought you may be in need of some knowledge to explain away your next embarrassing moment, this is for you.
ONE OF THE BEST BOND VILLAINS IS BACK And I am a little too excited about this. Who knew Blofeld had been sidelined all these years by a lawsuit. Here's hoping he makes a return with his furry friend soon.
GUESS WHERE ALL THE 1%ERS LIVE NOW? Forget Occupy Wall Street, perhaps Occupy K Street would have been more appropriate as wealth is concentrating around Washington DC. And yet, the Hollywood types who embraced the dirty foot Occupiers don't seem to recognize the problem as they support bigger government.
