BY THE NUMBERS BLOG My nerdy friend David who is degreed in economics as well as a small business owner writes a very cool blog where he pulls together figures to demonstrate the folly of today's current economic policies. Read it by clicking here.
THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR This book should be required reading for all high school seniors. It blows apart the media myth of how millionaires really live. Buy it on Amazon here.
THE CREATURE FROM JEKYLL ISLAND Want to know why we have the Federal Reserve? If you don't, you should and everyone should read this book. Buy it here.
More stuff to read as I think of it...
THEY HAVE A DEAL, THEY DON'T HAVE A DEAL Is anyone else completely over this drama? Dominick the Fill In Producer said it best yesterday when he said, "Keep it shut down until it actually affects ME". It certainly should be exciting, but we all know how this is going to end, so the drama isn't as high as politicians would like. If it weren't so danged important it would be super fun to pop some popcorn, sit back and watch the whole thing implode.
WELFARE DISTORTS THE JOB MARKET There are a lot of things that depress wages, like when someone will do a job for less than someone else. And sometimes, the business in question won't pay a decent wage and can't keep employees, which forces them to raise their offer to get and keep good people. This story in the Post I think was designed to illicit sympathy for both the fast food workers who must also get welfare to survive and the beleagured taxpayers who must subsidize the lives of these poor underpaid souls. I, however see something completely different. I'll explain today who welfare distorts and supresses wages.
WALMART MAKES A STRATEGIC ERROR I mentioned in passing the looting that took place in two Louisiana Walmarts, but this response deserves further discussion. Walmart, who has been told by the USDA that they should have limited EBT transactions to $50 per card until the computer system could get up and running. Instead, they let the hooligans who went to the store to load up on things they could not afford. And now Walmart says they did the right thing. What are they expecting from this? Gratitude from the people who thought nothing about stealing from them? I think it makes them look like suckers. Suckers, I tell you.
EVIE HUDAK, SACRIFICIAL LAMB? this column is interesting. In it, Post writer Alicia Caldwell argues that a recall of Evie Hudak, which would give control of the Senate to the Republicans, might be just the thing to help Hick get re elected. Why? It would prevent the Democrats from pursuing another far left agenda that could hurt Hick. Seriously. She's saying that Hick needs to be saved from the Left's agenda. Don't we all, Alicia, don't we all.
WE ARE ALL DEBBIE DOWNERS NOW This new poll by a news media who has been telling us for years how bad things are shows that we believe them. Meaning, we are increasingly pessimistic about how we think things are going. But more alarming to me is that people think government doesn't do enough to solve people's problems. Seriously. They don't think government does enough. To solve their problems. We are doomed. Not to be pessimistic, of course, but yes, we are doomed. Great breakdown is succinct form in Esquire, who cosponsored the survey, here.
THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD BE NICE TO THE JANITOR This story should be surprising to me, but oddly, it's not. It seems that we have too many adults who never grew up and too many of them are working in positions with children. But seriously, these kids could not have held out for more than a dollar? A lousy dollar?
INTERESTING WAY TO SURVIVE A BEAR ATTACK As I am adapting to life in wild and woolly Colorado, I have to always be on the lookout for ways to survive the random bear attack. Here's a new one from Canada: grab the bear's tongue. Here's hoping I'm never close enough to a bear to grab it's tongue.
WHO HASN'T HAD A LOUSY NEIGHBOR? But I've never had one THIS bad. How bad? So bad that a woman is now serving eight and half years probation for harassing her neighbors. That bad. Let's share lousy neighbor stories, shall we?
