BY THE NUMBERS BLOG My nerdy friend David who is degreed in economics as well as a small business owner writes a very cool blog where he pulls together figures to demonstrate the folly of today's current economic policies. Read it by clicking here.
THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR This book should be required reading for all high school seniors. It blows apart the media myth of how millionaires really live. Buy it on Amazon here.
THE CREATURE FROM JEKYLL ISLAND Want to know why we have the Federal Reserve? If you don't, you should and everyone should read this book. Buy it here.
More stuff to read as I think of it...
THERE ARE A LOT OF SCHOOL BOARD RACES THIS NOVEMBER But none with a more far ranging impact then Douglas County. Right now, school board candidates in Denver Public Schools are running as reform or "traditional" schools candidates. I honestly would love the chance to ask those "traditional" school candidates why we should spend one more dollar on the style of education that lead to the need for reform candidates in the first place. So why isn't Denver Public Schools a bigger deal than Douglas County? Because Douglas County is blazing trails with reform that the Denver Public School disfunctional board can only dream of. Today at 8:05 Ben Degrow with the Independence Institute joins me to discuss why these reforms are so threatening to unions and simply must be allowed to continue. Read his latest paper on DougCo schools here.
THIS IS LIKE BEATING UP MY LITTLE BROTHER'S FRIEND IT's too easy to make fun of this. But I'd have to stop laughing first.
HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE YOU PAYING FOR 40K A DAY? I've heard over and over again about how Colorado is shelling out mad cash to reopen RMNP. Can anyone explain to me, exactly, what we get for $40,300 a day? How many park rangers does that pay? What other costs are involved? I think it's a valid question since we keep hearing about how Colorado is paying that much to keep it open.
THIS SEEMS LIKE KIND OF A BIG DEAL When an entire police department gets taken over by a Sheriff's Department, that's a big deal. No matter how they try to spin it, it's a BIG deal. Now KDVR is reporting that one of the police officer was allegedly videotaped beating his daughter and the police chief declined to look into it. The coverup is always worse than the crime. Maybe not this time, but watch and decide for yourself. For the record, kicking your kid is never okay. Never.
COLOR ME SHOCKED. NOT REALLY Who is surprised that unions are going to get the waiver they want for Obamacare in the budget deal. Anyone? Anyone? Yeah, me neither.
BUT...BUT...AREN'T WE SUPPOSED TO WANT TO BE LIKE EUROPE? Guess what's making a comeback in Europe? Coal. That's right, dirty, filthy, disgusting coal is going to be powering the quaint little coffee shops liberals love to wax poetic about. So does this make coal cool again? If the French are doing it?
ENDING GANG VIOLENCE...BY ASKING NICELY? I'm not sure about this anti-gang strategy of hauling in players and asking them to stop and offering them social service help to leave the gangs behind. But hey, this is not my area of expertise. But how can you launch a program like this and not structure some sort of real time reporting to know how effective the strategy is, at least when it comes to the usage of social services? And what kind of social services are we talking about? I also realize this is one part of a bigger wheel, but it seems...well...odd. I think the real reason I don't know if this is a good thing is it's very difficult to gauge it's effectiveness, and the last thing we need is another government programs with nebulous outcomes.
IS THERE ANYTHING THE NSA DOESN'T SNOOP ON? This NSA story should be the biggest news ever, but at this point, I think Americans are used to the idea that the NSA is snooping on us all the time, wherever we go and however they want. That didn't take long, did it? To get us all used to the notion that there is no privacy and we should all just sit down and accept that the government is gathering data on us even though we've done nothing wrong in the name of National Security.
YAY, YOU HAVE INSURANCE! GOOD LUCK FINDING A DOCTOR Massachusetts passed Romneycare years ago so all Massholes would have coverage (yes, I called them Massholes...they earn that title) and all would be well in the world. Except many doctors no longer accept new patients and getting into SEE a doctor sometimes takes a month or more. Longer wait times are our future. Read the whole article to truly understand.
INTERESTING WAY TO SURVIVE A BEAR ATTACK As I am adapting to life in wild and woolly Colorado, I have to always be on the lookout for ways to survive the random bear attack. Here's a new one from Canada: grab the bear's tongue. Here's hoping I'm never close enough to a bear to grab it's tongue.
THINK YOU'RE GONNA SAVE MONEY BY CARRYING ON A BAG? Now even legit airlines are considering charging folks for carry on bags. If you have to pay, will you? This is precisely why I fly Southwest most of the time. They keep the nickel and diming to a minimum.
THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD BE NICE TO THE JANITOR This story should be surprising to me, but oddly, it's not. It seems that we have too many adults who never grew up and too many of them are working in positions with children. But seriously, these kids could not have held out for more than a dollar? A lousy dollar?
