BY THE NUMBERS BLOG My nerdy friend David who is degreed in economics as well as a small business owner writes a very cool blog where he pulls together figures to demonstrate the folly of today's current economic policies. Read it by clicking here.
THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR This book should be required reading for all high school seniors. It blows apart the media myth of how millionaires really live. Buy it on Amazon here.
THE CREATURE FROM JEKYLL ISLAND Want to know why we have the Federal Reserve? If you don't, you should and everyone should read this book. Buy it here.
More stuff to read as I think of it...
BEING TRANGENDERED IS = TO BEING REPUBLICAN The Colorado University Board of Regents voted last week to expressly forbid discrimination based on gender identity OR political affiliation. As the Board sits around and pats itself on the back for creating such a welcoming environment for possible transgendered folks AND Republicans, it needs to examine why this is necessary in the first place. More importantly, they should challenge current staff to be less lock step in political viewpoints. College campuses are ginormous echo chambers, where everyone agrees with everyone else and collectively shuns anyone who dares disagree. Students are cowed into silence for fear of retaliation from petty and small minded professors more hell bent on spreading the same nonsense they learned in college to young skulls full of mush than truly fostering a spirit of intellectual debate. Rant over. Will college campuses every be inhabited equally by conservatives? Not as long as university systems do things like this and look around waiting for praise for their vision. The Post has an interesting take on why professors are liberals, read it for more insight.
DID THE GOP FINALLY GROW A SPINE? Last week the GOP House passed two bills that showed some backbone. First, they voted to cut the food stamp budget 40 billion dollars over 10 years. My nerd economist friend David breaks down why the hysteria from the Left is completely over the top and not based in reality here. The House also passed a continuing spending resolution (because we're apparently never having a budget again) that defunded Obamacare while continuing to overspend on everything else. This one could lead to a government shutdown of nonessential services. Of course the White House and the Democrats are all breathlessly shouting, "Well I DEEECLARE" while pretending to faint from the impropriety of it all. Except it's all been done before and eventually they will have to do something or the government shuts down. Here's hoping the GOP is going to see this thing through and not blink first. Of course the Senate strategy seems to be in disarray already.
THE RELIGION OF PEACE STRIKES AGAIN This time in Kenya, where as of Sunday night there were a confirmed 68 dead with more bodies expected to found when authorities finally wrestle control of the upscale mall in Nairobi back from Al-Shabab terrorists. Witnesses have reported that Muslims were told to leave as non-Muslims were the target. Now is where I'm supposed to say that I know not all Muslims are terrorists, but I'm gonna leave that up the peaceful Muslims to weigh in and express their outrage. Religion of peace, indeed.
THE SOUR GRAPES 2013 TOUR CONTINUES Can someone let Angela Giron and John Morse know that no matter how many times they say this was a victory for gun grabbers it doesn't change the fact that they got their butts kicked in the recall. That is all.
2 BILLION IS QUITE A CHUNK OF CHANGE and I ask the simple question: where will the money come from? Let's see how the Legislature handles this one.
OUR BUS DRIVER MAY HAVE BEEN MEAN BUT AT LEAST SHE WAS SOBER So a guy drives a group of football players to their game, and then sideswipes a car on the way in. Seems he was drunk. While driving a bus full of football players. Seriously.
THAT'S OKAY, I'D TELL HIM NO TOO Jumpin' Joe Biden is coming to visit today to survey flood damage. At least one sheriff has politely declined requests for protection for the visit due to actual residents needing help first. But I'm sure the Veep will find other ways to annoy people while he's here.
I FIND THIS STORY DISTURBING I learned a long time ago to not judge anyone else's marriage or relationship. What works for me may not work for you. But if this NY Post story is accurate, there is pressure on Huma Abedin to dump her creepy husband Anthony Weiner to remain in the Hillary Clinton Circle of Love. One thing not mentioned here? The child Huma shares with Anthony. Bad choices aside, he is the father of her kid. That should count for something. This story is just icky. I actually hope this is a fabrication.
SO A SEX OFFENDER MOVES INTO A NEIGHBORHOOD and goes before 100 concerned parents to tell them he is not a threat. This is an interesting story and one that got me thinking about what I'd do in this situation. And after thinking about it quite a bit, I'm still not sure. Does this guy's open discussion about what he did change anything if you were a parent?
YET ANOTHER SEED OF DOUBT THAT THIS SYRIA DEAL IS REALLY A DEAL According to a guy who claims to be a Syrian Brigadier General (I seriously believe nothing anymore) Assad ordered him to gas civilians numerous times and that Syria's chemical weapons are headed to Hezbollah. I'm sure this is going to go exactly as it's supposed to.
I KNEW THIS WAS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE If you are fond of those delightful wet wipes designed to provide a more comfortable level of clean when you go potty. They are advertised as "flushable" but it seems that might be a little optimistic. They are gumming up the works all over the place.
